Original page More from SMK, National Gallery of Denmark

Copy in plaster of a sculpture depicting the goddess of the soul, Psyche (or Aphrodite, perhaps?), dating back to the 2nd Cent. BCE. When the Polish-Danish artist Elisabeth-Jerichau Baumann visited the Turkish bath in the Topkapi-palace in Istanbul in 1869, she compared the nude bodies of the women from the Harem to this sculpture (and finished off with a racist conclusion typical of her time): “- here is a Venus de Milo, over there the Medici Aphrodite, right here stands the Psyche of Capua and there are the black negresses trying in vain to wash themselves clean.”
